Question- Discuss the concept of teaching methods and discipline according to pragmatistic education. 

Answer -

Educational Methods : As long as Pragmatic educational methods are concerned they can, well, be divided into four elements in the process of teaching-learning. The same are narrated as here under-

(i) Experience : The pragmatic methods of education are based on psychology and sociology, subject to the conditions that they should provide scope for active participation by the educand and also that the methods adopted must be dynamic and changeable. The methods of the teaching must be purposeful and based on experience.

(ii) Learning by Doing : Pragmatism refused to distinguish between theory and practice. True education as far as they concerned, lies not in learning but in doing, and the child learns by active work.

(iii) Integration : The principle of integration is of major importance in pragmatic theory. It is believed that knowledge should not be fragmented. The process of learning should be an integrated one.

(iv) Project Method : On accomplishment of above methods, Project Methods come-up an it has been invented by Kilpatric. A complete detailed report is to be prepared. The project method has particularly been useful in the case of curricular programmes.

Discipline : Even in general, discipline is an important factor in school life and administration, but under the pragmatic pattern of education, it assumes special importance. The pragmatists believe that the child must benefit from his social environment, and this obviously cannot do in the absence of discipline.

Conclusion : The above elements of Pragmatic education reveals that this system adopts a healthy structure of teaching and learning and as such provides a good and adequate class-room practice and this system of educator and educand influences child’s development at large as it enhances the qualities of self-reliance, independence, sociability, co-operation and last but not the least sympathy.
