A small bird collect the material to build its nest in the upper corner of our drawing room. After looking at it we try to remove it. But the bird again bird the small pieces of straw leaves etc. and engages itself in building its next. What makes it so much haid working ? Why did it learn to build the nest? Similarly, we see a student burning midnight oil during the examination days, a boy constantly busy in learning how to cycle even after getting many cuts bruises. What makes them to engage in one or the other type of learning and continue their effort while facing many handicaps and obstacles. Now the question arises what is that which pushes and pulls an individual to move or act in such a specified way to attain the desired objectives. In psychology, it is named as motive. A motive derived our behaviour in the same way as a motor vehicle is driven by the fuel in its tank. There are number of motives in our personal life and social life. Which are responsible for energizing and motivating our behaviour.

Incentive in Motivation : A behaviour gets reinforced through a proper schedule of appropriate reinforce including incentive. It is also true of the learning behaviour. However, the decision in a particular teaching-learning situation rests on the teacher for the employment of one or the other reinforcer and incentive sometimes the learner any be motivated through a few words of paise or non-verbal behaviour like smiling nodding of the neck and accepting glimps, other times, he may need recognization in terms of grades, medals or prizes.
