Rousseau’s clarion call was a desperate scream of a philosopher-educationist against formal, verbal, and artificial education prevalent during his time, and exhorted one and all to consider education as a means to bring about the natural and normal development of a child in a healthy, natural environment. His first sentence in his famous book Emile and Education, sums up his attitude,
"All things are good as they came from the hands of the author of Nature, everywhere they degenerate in the hands of man".

Naturalism, therefore, considers Nature as the sole source of inspiration. Further, the teacher should remember that a child’s nature is not static, it is dynamic, and it is developing. A teaching programme or activity should, therefore, be in accordance with the changing nature of the child, providing variety and interest.
