Role of Textbooks in Strengthening Gender Equality
Gender equality can also be strengthened by the content contained in the textbooks. For example, by giving place to the biography of Mahadevi Verma, Sarojini Naidu etc. in the book of Hindi, the feeling of following their ideals awakens in the girls and the path of gender equality is also paved. Therefore, the role of textbooks in strengthening gender equality can be described in the following forms :
1. Inclusion of idealistic textbooks : Idealistic textbooks should be included in the school because gender inequality cannot be eliminated in the absence of ideals. Therefore, idealistic text books should be given place at the primary level and at the higher level. Through this, ideals can be developed in every boy and girl and the situation of gender inequality is not seen in idealistic boys and girls.
2. Textbooks based on positive thinking : In the selected curriculum at every level, those textbooks should be included, through which positive thinking can be developed in boys and girls and no discrimination can be shown between women and men. This will end gender discrimination and it will also have a favourable effect on the social level.
3. Inclusion of the spirit of equality : The text books should include the subject material showing the spirit of equality so that the sense of equality can be developed among the boys and girls. Stories related to the cooperation of boy and girl should be taught at the primary level.
4. Inclusion of Empowerment of Women : Materials related to women empowerment should be included in the textbooks. Through the measures of women empowerment, awareness is developed in the girl child and the girl child becomes aware of her rights. Also boys are familiar. Due to this, they have a positive attitude towards the girl child. This also strengthens gender equality.
5. Ethics based textbooks : Ethics based textbooks are prevalent at the primary level itself, whereas it should be practiced till the higher secondary level. Ethics based textbooks determine the moral responsibilities of boys and girls. It shows the equality of boys and girls. When boys and girls study ethics-based text books from primary level to higher secondary level, then gender equality will definitely develop.
6. Women Awareness Based Textbooks : Textbooks should include subject materials related to women awareness and both boys and girls can read these topics. With this, the girls themselves will become aware as well as the students will also cooperate in making them aware. This will also lead to the development of gender equality.
7. Development of the spirit of freedom : The contents of textbooks should discuss the rights of men and women and every boy and girl should be aware of the rights related to their freedom. By studying such facts, both (boy and girl) will be able to give adequate consideration to each other's independence. This will also eradicate gender inequality and establish gender equality.
