Women face many problems in their day-to-day life at home and outside the home:
➤ Many negative elements have to be faced in the status of women. These prohibitive effects are: female feticide, female infanticide, dowry, sexual harassment and widowhood.
➤ The number of girls in the age group of 0–6 is decreasing due to infanticide, female infanticide etc.
➤ Although the home is considered a safe place for women, yet many types of sexual abuse such as beatings, denial of basic rights, marriage harassment, dowry, death and forced stay in the house, all take place in the house itself.
➤ About 30 percent of crimes against women are linked to domestic violence or assault.
➤ Because domestic violence occurs in the home, it is usually considered a family feud or a misunderstanding.
➤ Safe housing or old age homes compel many widows to move out of oppressive families.
➤ Although the Dowry Prohibition Act was passed in 1961 and amendments were made in it in 1984 and 1986, still violence related to dowry is increasing.
➤ Rape is the act of forcibly having sex with any woman for which there is a provision of imprisonment of not less than 7 years. If it is custodial rape, gang rape and rape of pregnant woman or rape of girls below 12 years of age, it is punishable with imprisonment of not less than 10 years.
➤ The abuse or assault that women endure at their work place is called sexual harassment. The punishment given for this is punishable according to the 1997 judgment of the Supreme Court.
➤ There have been definite changes in the condition of widows in recent times but those widows who do not have adequate economic and social support, will continue to face these problems.
➤ Strict enforcement of laws, change of heart, and social and economic security, if given to women, can solve their problems to a great extent.
