Question- Contribution of John Dewey in Education.

Answer -

Contribution of John Dewey

Dewey has played an eminent role in the field of educational philosophy and his contribution to this system is unique and outstanding along with his contemporaries. Though, like others, his philosophy also possesses certain drawbacks, yet his contribution is of paramount significance. We have the following points to note in this connection:

  1. Progressive Outlook : He gave a progressive outlook to education in an educational philosophical way. To him, education was life in itself. This is not preparation for life.
  2. According to him, education itself is a life and it is up to us how to enjoy it.
  3. His fusion of psychological and sociological aspects of education is really a great contribution.
  4. He established an organic relationship between the individual and society, which is under the current democratic movement in education.
  5. He gave new direction to educational aims, curriculum methods, and the concept of discipline and school.
  6. Experimentalism : John Dewey was an original thinker after Plato. He was a great philosopher and practical teacher. His experimental school served as a model and a laboratory for experimenting with his ideas.
  7. Pragmatism : Dewey’s philosophy of education is practical. It is not an academic discussion of educational problems but a dynamic and objective philosophy. He experimented with his ideas and then formulated a theory.
  8. Democratic Approach : Dewey’s views about the teacher as an observer, guide, and helper, overthrew the dominance of the teacher in the educational process. He assigned great responsibility to the teacher.
  9. Positivism : Dewey recommended positive discipline, self, and social discipline in school.
  10. Social Outlook : Dewey has sufficiently stressed the social nature of education by pointing out that ‘social efficiency’ is the aim of education.
